The following functions can do that:

• $left
• $right
• $mid

Examples: suppose name1 is abcdef

• ${name1.$left_1} -> a
• ${name1.$left_2} -> ab
• ${name1.$right_1} -> f
• ${name1.$right_2} -> ef
• ${name1.$right_3} -> def
• ${name1.$mid_2_1} -> b
• ${name1.$mid_3_3} -> cde

They behave exactly like SQL Server's left, right, and substring functions.
